Religion in the past and now in the USA

Religion in the Past and Now in the USA
Religion in the USA is different than any country in the world. Every city in the USA has different kinds of religion such as Catholic, Christian, and Lutheran.  According to the interview  that I did with Foxdale a resident, who is 90 years old, that person who works in the church, she was explaining the activities and events she used to do in the church while she was working there. Similarly in 1940, there is an organization that helped students become more active in the religious community and develop skills in the future (la Vie,1941,p158). I will discuss in my paper the Religion from 1940 to 1950, until recent day such as the activities, and the lifestyle of religious people.

First, the difference between the religion in 1950 and the recent day religions is the kind of religious activities . According to the Daily Collegian  it says that one of the most important religious activities is playing religious movies. The way  the church did activities was to show movies on Sunday related to religion and people would discuss with each other about the movie. Showing movies represented the kind of religious activities people used to have in that period of time .(3 March, 1950). However, the recent day activities and according to the interview I had at Foxdale, people who work in church  on Sundays perform a kind of prayer, and then they meet and discuss about the different kinds of religion and the rules of the religion. As a result of my reading, the religion activities are different from past to recent day.

Second, the lifestyle of  religious people is different in the recent day society. According to the Daily Collegian “the main purpose of religious life  week is to help everyone realize the importance of religion in the age of science.” To explain this quote, the lifestyle of religious people in the past focused on assisting people to  remember the rules of religion and how the religion  is necessary. (18 Frbruary,1490). Unlike the past, in the recent society the religious people help  by  answering questions that people have about the religion instead of reminding them about the religious rules.  However, the time of  prayer is the same in the past, people used to pray on Sundays and they still do.

In conclusion, religion has witnessed a lot of changes in the past 50-60 years such as the activities and life style, but it is not a big difference. The most beautiful thing I noticed about religious people in the past and now is that they are so dedicated to their religion.

Reaction 8

In happiness book in page 36 in the last paragraph the author illustrates that people who are happy have a positive feeling of pleasure, and they are enjoying their life. However, unhappy people have a negative reaction that make them sad in their life, and he or she is not living as a happy person, because negative reaction make people angry. Sometimes having optimistic experience is important for people to become happy but it is not enough.

Trip to Foxdale

How did this trip compare to the expectations you had before you went?

Before I went to Foxdale, I thought I will not enjoy there. After I went to the Foxdale and met these people, I enjoyed . I like the person that I met, she told me some stories about herself. She told me that even she is 90 years old, she wants to complete her master’s degree at Penn State, she motivated me to complete my master’s degree at Penn State. I like her motivation because in my country when people reach the age of  60 or 90 years old, they think only about their  job and retirement.

What did you enjoy?  What was challenging?

I enjoyed this experience because I have never experienced  like this in my country. The thing that challenged me is that  I misunderstood some of the vocabulary because the topic that we were discussing was about religion and I did not know what  kinds of religion she was talking about. The thing that surprised me was a person I met who knew everything about my religion Islam, she was talking to me about it.

what advice do you have for future IECP students taking a trip similar to this one?

I like this trip I hope IECP plans the same trip every semester because it is helpful to the students to practice their English..

I appreciate my teacher Ruth who  helped us to go there and meet these people. I will not forget that enjoyable experience.

My reaction (the summary of my reading)

The author clarified  that the relationship between happiness and success is mutual in different  ways like when it comes to  love and work.  Happiness  controls success. For example, people who are happy have  good relationships, and are very enthusiastic in their work. The author explained  The meaning of happiness to be  the experience of pleasure.

My Reaction 7

Today I began to read chapter 3 on happiness book. The most striking quote that I read today is  that  "the great end of all human industry is the attainment of happiness. For this were arts invented, sciences cultivated, laws ordained, and societies modeled." (Page32, the British Philosopher David Hume argues that). The interesting things for me in   this quote is that the importance of  the human being that everything is assuring his or her happiness.

My emotions about what is Happeniness

My emotions about what I read in “What is Happiness?”

I am almost done with chapter two in what is Happiness, I reached  the   Happiness Archetype. In the  Happiness Archetype that I read on Monday I really like happiness point, it taught me   to be happy in  the present and future. If people want to be happy, they should accept  the difficulties that they faced. This part of the happiness Archetype  influenced me a lot. Thinking  about how  to be happy in present and future  and don’t think just about the present. For example, I came from my country to study English to find a good work in  the future, I feel exhausted and tired when  I am  studying but it  will be a benefit to me in the future. I am so happy to understand the part  of the book that I read.

Reaction 4

In Happiness book that I read,  I reached on   the Hedonism Archetype method that  make people happiness only on the present.  In this method the author illustrate the  hedonism archetype which is seeks pleasure and avoid pain and the errs in equating effort with pain and pleasure with happiness . The author mentioned story or 'event" of  the old episode of "The Twilight Zone" which is a ruthless criminal, he is greeted by an angel sent to every wish. He list his desire for the angle ,he asks for money, favorite food, and beautiful women all these desire are appear for him but his life after he  death is not seems good. Also,  he asks for work that will challenge him and is told that is in this place he can desire wherever he want "Except the chance to work for the things he receives". The criminal was  sad and told the angel" he want to go to other place"  but angel threatening him with ominous laugher of the devil "This is the other place". the criminal thought he is in heaven  an and he wants go to the hell. The criminal did all that things he wants to make him happy  without pain. This event that I read it is interesting because  the story is looks like real story  from the natural live.  Each person want to be happy without pain. Even me I want be happy all the time without feeling a pain I want every things in my live be perfect without any harm and pain.

my reaction

Today I finished chapter one and I began chapter two. The  chapter I read today is about how to become happier. There are several ways that make you happy, by doing different practices and different rituals.1/Creating rituals by assuming new behavior or changing your habits. Even though that change is difficult, try to train by  changing  your routine to become happier.

2/Express Gratitude; write  some  sentences before going to sleep about the things you did all day and thank yourself about what you achieved from work or study.  At the end of the chapter, the writer explained the opportunities  of happiness and how to use these opportunities .

I really liked the book because it is interesting and it taught me how I can become a happier person.
